SANDY - National-level rugby made its way back to the Wasatch Front for the first time in four years Saturday afternoon at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The showcase event featured the U.S. National team vs. Uruguay and a slew of local talent.

Former University of Utah student and Salt Lake resident Matekitonga Moekiola returned to Utah after a year of representing USA Rugby.

"It's been crazy. . . . I've been back just a couple of days. Got to see my family and friends before I have to leave again," he said.

A soft-spoken gentle giant, the 6-foot, 260-pound Moekiola turns aggressive on the field.

It didn't take long for Uruguay to find that out during Team USA's 43-9 win.

From the "prop" position, Moekiola inflicts physicality in an attempt to keep foes at bay.

Regardless of how much of a toll it takes on his body, it's a way of life for the 30-year-old.

Before joining USA Rugby, Moekiola paid his dues playing for a New Zealand league team.

He admits it was a culture shock all the way around.

His next journey will take him and his U.S. teammates to Japan later this month to conclude their season.

Also making an appearance for the national team was former BYU standout Salesi Sika.
