Provo • It is probably fortunate for the BYU Cougars that they are relatively deep at receiver this year.

BYU announced Thursday that freshman receiver Ross Apo suffered an open dislocation of his left index finger during Wednesday's practice and underwent surgery on Wednesday evening.

Apo is expected to be out approximately six weeks. He played in a few special teams plays in BYU's 23-17 win over Washington, but did not line up from scrimmage on offense.

The 6-foot-3, 202-pound receiver from Arlington, Texas, enrolled at BYU in January, but had shoulder surgery and missed spring ball.

He was ranked as the No. 13 receiver in the country by Rivals.com out of high school, and averaged 19.1 yards per catch over his three-year career at The Oakridge School.

So'oto more than so-so

BYU defensive end Vic So'oto said Saturday's game at Air Force carries some extra significance for him because he has an uncle in the Air Force. Coach Bronco Mendenhall said So'oto represents a BYU success story, after the senior from Carlsbad, Calif., found trouble his first few years at BYU.

"Vic has had a lot of life lessons here. He has been suspended at least once that I remember. He's been in my office a number of other times. … He has grown as a young man. He has really matured as a player as well, but I have focused much more on who he has become, and it has been gratifying."

Briefly

Mendenhall said Wednesday that BYU's 2011 schedule is "basically done" and that athletic director Tom Holmoe could be announcing the two or three additions in the near future. It could be a 13-game schedule if the Cougars agree to play a game at Hawaii, per NCAA rules.
