Jake Heaps says he is still a happy young man. BYU's freshman quarterback reiterated that sentiment after practice Tuesday, despite being pulled from last week's 35-14 loss against Air Force after throwing an interception in the second quarter. Heaps never returned to the game, as Riley Nelson played the entire second half. "I think the coaches are doing the best that they can, and what they think is the best for both me and Riley," Heaps said Tuesday. "You know, you trust in your coaches and you just follow your head guy. You are going into battle with them, so whatever he says, you are going to go do. So that's all I am worried about right now." Heaps said he still feels like the coaches believe in him. "Yeah, I feel like I have my coaches' confidence. It was just a decision they felt like was the best for our team at that time. So hats off to them for making that decision and sticking with it."———————————- Time for some morning links. I wrote for today's newspaper about last year's 54-28 loss to Florida State in Provo, and how disastrous it was for the Cougars. Interesting debate item: If BYU had beaten FSU that day, would an 11-1 BYU team have been extended a BCS berth? Probably not, because TCU and Boise State were undefeated. But it would have made the end of the season pretty darn interesting around Provo. Here's my notebook, which contains more on the quarterback controversy and an injury update. Of course, the WAC filed a lawsuit against the MWC on Tuesday. Here's a good roundup of all the key issues in the case by The Tribune's Michael C. Lewis.———————————— More from the group interview last night with Heaps: On whether there is added pressure on him to perform better this week: "No, if you prepared yourself well for practice, there is no need for pressure. So you just have to take advantage of the opportunities that you have, and go out and make it count at practice. So if you don't make it happen in practice, there is some pressure. But hopefully that doesn't happen." On whether he's nervous going into a place like FSU: "I think Florida State is a great team. I think they have a lot of great talent on their team. They are coached well. I really respect coach Fisher. But they are not unbeatable, and they are not anything we are necessarily going to back down from, so I am really excited for this week. I am excited for our group, to see how we handle things and how we come back and battle for this next game." On whether he's licking his chops for a chance to face FSU's secondary: "Oklahoma is a good team. Florida State defense is really good. I think we have an opportunity to have some success. It is a matter of how much we go out and execute. But I am really excited for this game." On who picked him up emotionally on the sidelines after the interception:"The whole team did. It never was a thing where anyone turned their back on me. We are a pretty collective group, and everybody was telling me, 'hey, don't worry about it. Come back for the next one. Let's get it on the next one. Unfortunately, I didn't have a next one, so that is the way it was."
