A Layton doctor faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for illegally distributing a pain killer.

Paul Ray Taylor, who pleaded guilty Friday to one count of distributing oxycodone, admitted providing prescriptions "to various individuals" with whom he did not have a legitimate doctor-patient relationship or without conducting appropriate medical examinations.

He will be sentenced April 1 by U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups.

Taylor has been in jail since his November 2007 arrest and his licenses to practice medicine are suspended, according to the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.

The 64-year-old operated a family practice in Layton.

A federal grand jury indicted Taylor on two counts of illegally distributing a controlled substance between June and October 2007. At that time, authorities said they were working to link him to the overdose deaths of six people.

As part of a plea deal, the U.S. Attorney's Office has agreed not to seek a new indictment charging him in any deaths.
