Fort Worth, Texas • BYU running back Bryan Kariya insists that freshman quarterback Jake Heaps still has the confidence and respect of his teammates. But there had to be some doubters in the first half of Saturday's 31-3 loss at No. 4 TCU.

Heaps only threw one interception in the half, but otherwise it was one of the worst offensive performances in school history for a program that likes to think it at least had something to do with the development of the forward pass.

"We are a lot better offense than that," Heaps said.

The Cougars ran 21 plays in the first half — for 13 yards.

They did not cross midfield and had just one first down, which came on a 3-yard run by a player making his first carry of the season, Mike Hague.

"It was very frustrating for an offense when you can't reward your defense. The [defense] played amazing," Heaps said. "They battled, and it is just really frustrating to not be able to put some points on the board for them, and get some momentum swing our way."

Heaps finished with 91 passing yards and was sacked three times.

"We got to find ways to make more plays," said quarterbacks coach Brandon Doman. "… There's no consistency or continuity right now."
