Provo • Troubled BYU receiver O'Neill Chambers was suspended indefinitely on Monday by coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Tuesday, the coach said the junior from Harmony, Fla., has asked for his release from the program and intends to transfer to another Division I school.
"I have a list of schools that we released him to today, and there were six or seven," Mendenhall said. "I can't recall what they were. It rarely means that is where he will end up, but he had a list that he was interested in."
Asked if it was Chambers' choice or his for the transfer to happen, Mendenhall said, "mine."
The school announced the suspension was for "disciplinary reasons" on Monday. Chambers is still in school and will finish the semester, Mendenhall said.
"In this particular case, it is always hard to see a player make repeated mistakes. In relation to what I thought was right, it was not a difficult [decision]," Mendenhall said.
The coach said the team already has been through one Chambers suspension this season and believes it won't "really effect us at all."
He declined to characterize the receiver's career at BYU. Chambers leaves as the school's all-time leader in kickoff return yardage, but was generally a disappointment as a receiver.
Injury update
Safety Steven Thomas (concussion), who has not played since the loss at Florida State, has been cleared to play Saturday. Linebacker Jameson Frazier (broken thumb) also will play.
However, defensive back Carter Mees suffered a dislocated shoulder against TCU and will need season-ending surgery later this week.
Midseason honors
No Cougars were named to Phil Steele's 2010 Midseason All-MWC first team. Running backs J.J. DiLuigi and Bryan Kariya, offensive tackle Matt Reynolds, safety Andrew Rich and linebacker Jordan Pendleton were named to the second team.
Third-teamers included kicker Mitch Payne and offensive linemen Jason Speredon and Braden Hansen.
