PROVO — In its best overall game of 2010, Brigham Young rolled up a 55-7 Mountain West Conference victory against overmatched UNLV on Saturday in LaVell Edwards Stadium in front of 61,283. The win was also a breakout game for Cougars' quarterback Jake Heaps, who displayed calm in directing the BYU attack.

Heaps, who didn't play the fourth quarter, completed 19-of-31 for 294 yards and two scores. He did not throw an interception, often enjoying perfect protection.

While the Cougars' offense was piling up points, most of which came in the first half, the BYU (4-5, 3-2 MWC) defense put the clamps on the Rebels (1-8, 1-4), who gained just 73 total yards in the opening 30 minutes, intercepting two passes. Brian Logan picked off a UNLV pass to open the game, while Jameson Frazier's pick set up a 48-yard Mitch Payne field goal to close out a 38-0 first half.

It wasn't until 12:07 of the second period that UNLV earned its first first down. The Rebels had gained 10 total yard prior to a completion by second-string quarterback Caleb Herring. UNLV Starter Omar Clayton was pulled after the game's fourth series. UNLV scored its only touchdown in the waning seconds of the game.

Brigham Young opened a 45-0 lead on a 43-yard touchdown pass with just under 10 minutes to play in the third period as Heaps connected with Luke Ashworth, who turned a short pass into the big gainer.

BYU rushed for four first-half scores, including two by Joshua Quezada, who added a third to close out the third period.
