Provo • Jake Heaps isn't the only freshman who had his best game as a Cougar in Saturday's 55-7 win against UNLV at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Freshman running back Josh Quezada scored three rushing touchdowns, his first three of the season on the ground after catching a TD pass in the opener against Washington.

"I feel real grateful for the opportunities that I had. It feels good. … The holes were just beautiful," said Quezada, who finished with 65 yards on 13 carries.

Bryan Kariya and JJ Di Luigi also had touchdown runs, as the Cougars racked up 216 yards on the ground behind offensive linemen Matt Reynolds, Braden Hansen, Terence Brown, Jason Speredon and Braden Brown. Marco Thorson spelled Hansen when he left the game for good with a knee sprain in the first half.

"We can't give enough credit to those guys," Kariya said. "They just opened up the holes."

Coach Bronco Mendenhall said to expect more touchdowns from Quezada in the future.

"I love Josh and the way he runs the football. He's physical and he runs hard, and he's very humble," Mendenhall said.

Injury update

Fullback Mike Hague pulled a hamstring on a kickoff return in the first half and didn't return. Hague and Hansen will have MRIs on Monday to determine the extent of their injuries.

Reserve running back David Foote suffered a helmet-to-helmet hit. He may have suffered a concussion.

Briefly

BYU's five rushing touchdowns were the most it's had since getting six on the ground last year in a 59-21 win at UNLV. … Sophomore quarterback James Lark saw his first action and completed a 6-yard pass to B.J. Peterson in the fourth quarter.
