BYU can always say it won the final edition of college football's Poinsettia Bowl.

The San Diego Bowl Association announced on Wednesday that it is discontinuing the bowl game played at Qualcomm Stadium, which in 2016 was won 24-21 by BYU over Wyoming.

There were 12 Poinsettia Bowls, and BYU played in two of them, downing San Diego State 23-6 in the 2012 game. That game drew 35,442 and was the only one that drew more than 30,000 fans in the last six years. Last year's BYU-Wyoming game drew 28,114 fans.

The Association will continue to operate the Holiday Bowl, which has been played at Qualcomm a week after the Poinsettia Bowl.

BYU had an agreement in place to play in the 2018 Poinsettia Bowl, so athletic director Tom Holmoe will have to continue to work with ESPN to find a bowl landing spot for the Cougars that year in addition to 2017.

"BYU has a great relationship with the San Diego Bowl Game Association and appreciates the wonderful hospitality they've shown us for many years," Holmoe noted on Twitter shortly after the news broke. "Although we were sorry to learn the Poinsettia Bowl will no longer be played, we understand the decision and wish Mark Neville, Ted Tollner and their bowl committee the very best. We are working with ESPN to secure bowl arrangements for 2017 and 2018 and have an agreement in place with the Hawai'i Bowl for 2019.
