Provo • When he's gone after two or three more football games, BYU coaches and players are going to miss senior cornerback Brian Logan's big smile, outgoing nature, playmaking ability and skill as one of the best open-field tacklers in school history.

They are also going to miss his candy.

Logan, one of a dozen or so seniors who will play his final game at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday when the 5-5 Cougars play host to 1-9 New Mexico, always seems to have a pocketful of candy when he walks around campus. And the "Candy Man" is always happy to share. His favorite pregame treats are Fruit Gushers, which are actually advertised as fruit snacks.

A junior college transfer from Fremont, Calif., Logan has had a tremendous impact on the program since he arrived two years ago from Foothill College, coach Bronco Mendenhall said. The 5-foot-6 defensive back should get some consideration for first-team all-conference honors after earning All-MWC honorable mention status last season.

Logan's contributions to the program have been "just fantastic," Mendenhall said. "I hope we can find as many Brian Logans as possible, not only on the field, but off. I think he's had a great experience here. I love his confidence, I love his smile, I love his love for the game. I like his demeanor around the team. Plus, he's a good football player. He's a perfect fit for BYU. I hope we can find many more like him."

Logan said the emotions will be flowing Saturday when he runs out on the field for the final time.

"Just getting the respect of the players and the fans and the coaches, I think that's enough for me," he said, when asked what he hopes to see happen on Saturday. "Just seeing myself grow as a person and a football player, that does it for me. But winning out will help."

TCU and the turnaround

Given the team's big turnaround, senior receiver Luke Ashworth was asked Tuesday which of the five opponents that defeated BYU he would like to play over again.

"I would say it would be awesome to play TCU again, because that was kind of the turnaround to our season, of having a younger offense. From that point is when we started to grow a lot. From that point, we've matured since that game and I think we would do a lot better than we did," he said.

The third-ranked Horned Frogs defeated BYU 31-3 in Fort Worth.

Briefly

Despite injuries along the defensive line, Mendenhall said there is "no chance" that coaches will take the redshirt off freshman DT Travis Tuiloma. … Quarterback Jake Heaps left Wednesday's practice to go see a doctor for what trainer Kevin Morris said was a headache. Heaps is usually one of the last players off the practice field.
