Utah kicker Joe Phillips had a game-winning kick to start the season against Pitt, but he really doesn't have much of a desire for a chance to repeat the feat Saturday against BYU.

"It would be fun, but I'd rather see my teammates be successful and score a lot of touchdowns," he said.

A game-winning kick was about the only thing Phillips didn't deliver in Saturday's win at San Diego State.

Phillips had a busy day handling punting, kickoff and place-kicking duties during Saturday's win at San Diego State. He was recognized for his efforts by earning MWC Player of the Week honors.

Phillips made a 32-yard field goal and placed his first collegiate punt attempt at the San Diego State 2-yard line.

He averaged 60 yards on his kickoffs.

Phillips handled all the duties after punter Sean Sellwood had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown at Notre Dame. He had another blocked and returned for a touchdown in the Utes' 38-10 win over UNLV earlier in the year.

"We have to do what we need to to make ourselves better," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said of the switch. "Joe had a great week of practice and he has proved to be a great weapon for us. He is an absolute competitor."

Phillips is 11-for-12 in field goals this season and made a school-record 18 consecutive field goals before missing a 42-yard attempt at Air Force.

Last year Phillips had five field goals against the Cougars.

"It kept me busy," he said. "I'd love to see us score a bunch of touchdowns this year."

Hiding out

The Utes have closed practice to the media this week as is customary for BYU week.

Whittingham said he likes to keep practice closed to not only protect what the Utes are doing but to cut down on distractions.

"There is always an overblown focus on this game already," Whittingham said. "We want to minimize what we can with the distractions and let the team focus and concentrate as much as they can."

1-for-1

Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn joked that he is 1-for-1 in Hail Mary passes after he threw a 47-yarder against San Diego State. The ball was tipped and brought down by tight end Kendrick Moeai.

"In all honesty it was ridiculous," he said. "To complete a Hail Mary, that's the only one I've ever thrown, so I'm 1-for-1.

"The ball was so wet, when I caught the snap I said, 'How am I going to get this into the end zone?' I threw it as high as I could and it didn't get to the end zone but Luke Matthews tipped it at about the 2- or 3-yard line and it bounced into Kendrick's hands. It was insane."

Injury report

The Utes hope to get defensive linemen Sealver Siliga (shin) and Junior Tui'one (calf) back for Saturday's game. Tui'one has missed the last three games. Backup end Trevor Reilly (ankle) is doubtful. He missed the San Diego State game with the injury.
