The rivalry is captured in the memorable moments: Chris Yergensen kicking the winning field goal, Brandon Doman finding Jonathan Pittman on the sideline on fourth-and-13, Steve Savoy sprinting 92 yards on an option and Jonny Harline sinking to his knees and cradling the football.

It also is about the unforgettable mistakes and near-misses: Ryan Kaneshiro's field-goal try hitting the goal post, Michael Reed's dive coming up short of John Beck's fourth-down pass, Brice McCain allowing Austin Collie to run past him and Toby Christensen fumbling a punt.

In the past 20 games, while winning 10 apiece in the most competitive era of the rivalry's history, Utah and BYU have produced some remarkable performances, beyond the snapshots. The Tribune's 20-Year All-Rivalry Team celebrates the stars of the games — including those who enjoyed outstanding careers, and others who just delivered a great effort on the right day.

The toughest choice? Quarterback. Ultimately, this was the deciding question: Can you win a Heisman Trophy and not make this team? No.

Career achievement was the swing vote for Ty Detmer, the only BYU quarterback to win all three of his starts against Utah. During his Heisman season of 1990, Detmer passed for 451 yards and five touchdowns.

That trumps the performances of Doman, who led two fourth-quarter comebacks for BYU, and Utah's Mike McCoy, whose 34-31 victories in '93 and '94 came after BYU had won 19 of 21 games in the series.

The other offensive selections were easier. Brandon Warfield's 40-carry, 194-yard day for Utah in '02 came in the signature effort of a Ron McBride team, winning 13-6 by running the football and playing tough defense.

If Warfield was relentless, BYU's Luke Staley was explosive the previous year. Staley gained 169 yards on 17 carries to give unbeaten BYU a 24-21 win.

Kevin Dyson played in three Ute wins, catching nine passes for 143 yards as a senior. His 24-reception total cemented his spot, along with Collie, who had 18 catches for 304 yards in three games. In his only win over Utah in '07, Collie caught five balls for 126 yards, including a 49-yarder on the fourth-and-18 play during the winning drive.

Harline would be the tight end even if the last-play touchdown pass from Beck in '06 was his only catch. He was outstanding all day with seven receptions for 118 yards and three scores, including a one-handed grab.

As for the offensive line, earn All-America honors then go on to a long NFL career (BYU's John Tait and Utah's Jordan Gross and Chris Kemoeatu) and you're in. So is Denver rookie Zane Beadles of Utah.

Special distinction goes to BYU guard Larry Moore, who helped power BYU's 366-yard rushing effort in '96.

Defensively, BYU's Lenny Gomes will always have a place in the rivalry's lore for his declaration after the loss in '93 that the Utes someday would be "pumping my gas." The other linemen also distinguished themselves in victories: Utah's Ma'ake Kemoeatu (Chris' brother) in '99, BYU's Ryan Denney in '01 and Utah's Paul Kruger in 2008.

There was no shortage of linebacker candidates. Sheldon Deckart forced a fumble the Utes recovered in their end zone, keeping BYU from scoring a touchdown in '02. The next year, in a 3-0 loss, BYU's Colby Bockwoldt made four tackles for loss among 12 stops. And in '04, Spencer Toone's 14 tackles helped Utah complete a perfect regular season.

Ordinarily, his team's allowing 34 points would disqualify a defensive back. But Utah safety Casey Evans made a big impact in '05 with 13 tackles and a 30-yard fumble return for a touchdown. BYU's Josh Arnold ('91) and Utah's Joe Dale ('08) each intercepted two passes and BYU's Corby Hodgkiss made a red-zone interception as Brian Johnson was held to 129 passing yards in '07.

Based on one kick alone, Yergensen would make this team for his 55-yard field goal in '93, giving Utah its first win in Provo in 22 years. But Owen Pochman's showing in BYU's 26-24 win in '98 cannot be overlooked. Pochman made four field goals,.

Louie Sakoda's biggest play in four years of the rivalry was a run. His 18-yard gain on a fake punt turned around the '06 game for the Utes, even though they lost in the end. Daniel Jones' 95-yard kickoff-return TD in '98, pulling Utah within two points, is often forgotten. And Utah's Eric Weddle has to make the team somehow; his three punt returns for 48 yards in '04 give him a specialist's spot. —
