Freshman running back Harvey Langi might be first on Utah's depth chart, but he has been around football long enough to know that distinction matters little right now.

"I can't say I am the guy," he said. "There are two other running backs right behind me and some days they are not behind me, they are ahead of me."

Still, Langi, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound freshman out of Bingham, is at least holding his own in what has become a very muddled running back race.

Langi isn't losing ground to junior college transfer John White or to Thretton Palamo, a previous rugby standout, but he knows he hasn't separated himself much, either.

None has shown the consistency the coaches are looking for in a starting running back and now a fourth player, Tauni Vakapuna, has played his way into the race. Vakapuna, a 5-foot-9, 229-pound senior, rushed only 19 times for 79 yards in 2010, but has impressed Utah coach Kyle Whittingham since his return after missing spring ball.

Depth chart changes

The Utes made some depth chart changes Monday: Jeremiah Tofaeono is listed as the starter at right guard, Joe Kruger is listed as the starter at defensive end and Derrick Shelby now is at left end, where he'll compete with Tevita Finau. Dave Kruger and James Aiono are now listed as co-starters at defensive tackle.

Short takes

Freshman linebacker Jared Norris has reported to camp while the Utes continue to wait on junior college transfer Po'u Palelei. If he isn't in camp by the end of the week, it's unlikely he'll join the Utes, Whittingham said. … Tuesday is the first day in full pads for the Utes. —

Practice points

What we learned • As well as Jordan Wynn has done in camp, the coaches continue to be cautious with his shoulder, limiting his throws Monday and letting backup Jon Hays take many late-practice snaps.

Who was hot • Safeties Keith McGill and Eric Rowe stood out on defense, while Tauni Vakapuna could be playing his way into a running back role.

Who struggled • Nick Marsh and Coleman Petersen are competing for the role of place kicker but both have struggled with consistency.
