An interest in oil and some good recruiting tactics by Utah's coaches landed the Utes a receiver for their 2013 class. Andre Lewis, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver out of Diablo Valley College in Pleasant View, Calif., committed to the Utes on Monday.
Lewis said he picked the Utes over Arizona State, Texas Tech, Nevada and others because he liked the way the Utes recruited him and Utah has a good program for his goal of majoring in business and petroleum engineering.
"The coaching staff showed me a lot of love and respect for me," he said. "We just had a good connection."
It helped too that Lewis' older brother, Buffalo Bills receiver Steve Johnson, is good friends with former Ute Quinton Ganther.
"I got to know Quinton and he told me what a good program it was so that helped there," he said. "My family was behind me in any decision I wanted to make and it seemed like Utah was the place for me."
Lewis, who had 35 catches for 442 yards and five touchdowns last year, said he hopes to join the Utes in December.
As for his goal of studying petroleum engineering, Lewis said he has always had a strong interest in oil.
"The world revolves around it," he said. "Machines, cars, I want to know how it is they go gathering it and how it all works."
