"When I was a sophomore, it didn't really hit me for a while," she said. "I was still kind of caught up in the moment, and I didn't know what was going on. But this year, knowing I did it with basically my family, was amazing."
Fillpot, who earned All-State honors last season, ended her high school with a shutout. There was a little extra satisfaction because of a friendly rivalry between her and Ogden goalkeeper Kelsey East.
"I've been trying to outdo one person on shutouts, and I just tied her," Fillpot said. "We've been having our little competition, but I just tied her. We're 12 and 12."
Fillpot was crucial to the Lakers' second title in three years. One of her biggest saves Friday came in the final five minutes with Bonneville clinging to the lead. Bountiful's Jenny Skedros ripped a shot destined for the goal, but Fillpot snagged it with from the air with both hands. But Fillpot passed on the credit for the shutout to her teammates.
"I can thank them for saving my butt on a lot of things," she said.
Bonneville created the better chances in the first half but couldn't get anything past Bountiful keeper Charity Cole. That finally changed when Sienna Thornock settled the ball in the box and buried a shot into the corner just after halftime.
"It just came to my feet, and I just remembered I had to stay calm and just put it in the back of the net," Thornock said.
It was Thornock's third goal in two games.
"She's actually stepped up a lot," Fillpot said about Thornock. "She's been working a lot on placement, and we're trying to get her to focus on corners and stuff. She stepped it up when she needed to step it up, that's for sure."
Thornock admitted to nerves before the game but said they disappeared after about the first 10 minutes. She provided the only goal her team needed four minutes into the second half Friday.
"I had a good shot," she said. "I didn't think twice about it. I just took it."
Bonneville's defense thwarted the Braves' attacks, which became more intense during the final minutes. Lakers coach Rob McDaniel said it was fitting for the defense to deliver a shutout performance to end the season.
"That's been our thing all year long," he said about the defense. "We allowed the fewest goals in our region, fewest goals we've ever had at Bonneville. The defense, that's where it starts."
