The Utah Transit Authority and Salt Lake City have signed an agreement to build a new TRAX platform at 900 South and 200 West. Construction should start next spring, said UTA spokesman Justin Jones. The $1.2 million cost will be paid for through a grant from the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City. "It's very exciting," Jones said. "The demand for ridership in that area has increased and the city and UTA are just happy to meet that demand." D.J. Baxter, a senior aide to Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, said the city is excited to provide a means of transportation to an area that is attracting several new housing developments. "The city has always seen this area as one having enormous potential for residential development," he said. "We're thrilled now that the development is materializing and that we can further enhance the attractiveness of the neighborhood by constructing a new TRAX station." Construction will be done mostly at night to avoid affecting train schedules, Jones said. When completed, about a minute will be added to the time it takes for a train originating in Sandy to reach downtown. - Nicole Warburton
