Brigham Young coach Steve Cleveland will not take any disciplinary action against freshman forward Chris Miles, whom the Mountain West Conference publicly reprimanded Thursday for kicking Utah's Andrew Bogut in the back during the Utes' 72-58 victory over the Cougars at the Marriott Center on Monday night.

"He made a mistake," Cleveland said. "It wasn't premeditated. It was a reaction. If I thought it was anything else, I would have taken disciplinary action."

Calling the incident the least of his team's worries as it travels to play UNLV on Saturday, Cleveland said Miles simply reacted to Bogut falling on him.

Bogut had dunked on Miles, then hung on the basket momentarily, seemingly waiting for Miles to move out from underneath him. Miles was still there when Bogut let go, however, and the two crashed to the floor when Bogut came down on Miles.

Miles had his back to Bogut at the time, and didn't realize the Utah player hit him accidentally. In frustration, Miles then kicked Bogut and was called for a technical foul as tempers briefly flared among players from both teams.

Initially, Utah coach Ray Giacoletti believed the kick was an accident. But after seeing it on videotape, the Utah coach changed his mind.

"It looked intentional to me," he said. "I was proud of Andrew for just reacting the way he reacted."
