Alfred Murillo used last year's experience as a teaching point entering Wednesday's final round of the Class 1A boys' golf state tournament.

Murillo's Layton Christian team enjoyed a 23-shot lead entering the second round, but he didn't want that going to his players' heads.

"There are some great teams we're competing against, and any of them could easily come up on us," he told his team.

He didn't have to draw back too far for an example. Layton Christian trailed by nine strokes after the first day last year only to storm back and win the team title by 13 shots.

"The fact that was even possible, we knew by having a 23-point lead this time, my biggest challenge to them was not to allow this to get into your head and think we've got this," Murillo said.

It wasn't a problem Wednesday at Rose Park Golf Course. The Eagles kept their foot on the gas and cruised to a 41-stroke victory.

"I told them as long as they're playing with par to each of their players, I said don't worry about the big lead," Murillo said. "Find yourself hole to hole being in the level of competition around you. If you just stay with them, we're going to hold onto our lead."

Jaece Stokes, who won the 1A individual title last year, led Layton Christian with a 73-76—149, good enough for second place.

St. Joseph's Jared Kenny captured the individual title with a 71-75—146.

Layton Christian's Austin Geddings grabbed a share of third place with Rich's McKay Jarman. Both players carded 153s.

Layton Christian finished with a 622, while Green River took second with a 663. Rich was third with a 669.

Layton Christian won't have much of a layoff because it's moving up to Class 2A next year. That means the Eagles will return to the course in the fall, when 2A schools compete.

"We're taking a two-week break and going right back into it," Murillo said. —
