Jamaal Williams, that spunky 18-year-old BYU running back, apparently knew what he was talking about. It was Williams, remember, who suggested the Cougars would impose their will on the Texas Longhorns in Saturday's showdown between reeling BYU and the so-called 15th-ranked powerhouse from the Big 12. Well, putting a school-record 550 rushing yards on a team certainly qualifies. The Cougars (1-1), who looked awful offensively for most of the game in last week's 19-16 loss to Virginia, finished with 679 yards. They ran 99 plays out of Robert Anae's "go fast, go hard" offense. It was one of the most shocking performances in school history, given the quality of opponent and what happened last week."Tonight showed who we are, our identity," said linebacker Kyle Van Noy, who helped hold the Longhorns to 445 yards and just 21 points. "That is the heart that we have. Our team showed it tonight." Said BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall: "I thought our offensive plan was exceptional and I thought that our week of practice leading up to this game was one of the best I've seen since I've been the coach here." Certainly, Taysom Hill was exceptional. He rushed for 259 yardds, the most yards by a quarterback in the nation in a single game so far this season. It was the most rushing yards by an FBS quarterback in the past 10 years, just behind former Texas QB Vince Young's 267 in 2005. It was the second-greatest rushing performance in school history, behind only the 272 yards Eldon "the phantom" Fortie put up in 1962. "We expected to be able to run on them," Hill said. "We didn't expect to set the school record. But, hey, it was working, and we were able to move the ball really efficiently on the ground, and there was no need to go away from it, so we didn't." Hill's 68-yard TD run in the second quarter ties the school record for longest run by a BYU quarterback, the record he set last year against Hawaii. With 550 rushing yards, the Cougars broke the previous record of 465 set against Montana in 1958.Jamaal Williams rushed for a career-high 182 yards. Cody Hoffman played, after missing the Virginia game with hamstring issues, and moved to No. 3 on the BYU career receptions list with two catches vs. Texas. He now has 205 catches and trails only Margin Hooks (215) and Dennis Pitta (221). Defensively, senior Skye PoVey had a career-high nine tackles, eight solo. ————————— Texas saw its 13-game nonconference road win streak snapped. Here are a few comments from coach Mack Brown, receiver Mike Davis and defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat: Brown's overall summary of the game: "We're very disappointed in the loss. We knew we had to stop the running game coming in; we talked about it all week. We missed assignments, we missed tackles, and they ran the ball up and down the field."Brown on the emotional toll: "Guys are disappointed. Coaches are disappointed. We've got to go back and regroup and do a better job against Ole Miss next week." Brown on BYU's defense:"Brigham Young's got a great defense. They were third in the country in total defense last year. They've got four or five pro prospects. Van Noy is as good a player as there is in the country." Brown on BYU's rushing attack:"Our players are smart. They get it, and they understand we didn't get our jobs done tonight as players or coaches. We couldn't stop the run and we couldn't make third and fourth and short. That's basically the story of the game." Davis on when it got away:"This game is based on momentum. You got to execute on third and one and sustain some third and longs. We just didn't execute well." Jeffcoat on what Hill did to them: "We didn't keep the quarterback contained and that was a problem of ours. We needed to keep the quarterback contained."Jeffcoat on the roughing the kicker penalty:"It was a big momentum change. We had them stopped and we would have had the ball with a chance to score. ... So it is tough and no one likes to lose, but it happened. We are going to go back to the film, get it back together and bounce back and get ready for the next one. You can't let a loss beat you twice."
