Invitations to the June 11 Utah Museum of Fine Arts "Art in the Garden" at Glennwood on Walker Lane in Holladay suggested "a light wrap," but the 430-plus savvy guests arrived at the tented gala armed with umbrellas and good spirits.

The tour of Nancy and Jeff Flamm's garden was a washout, but the art was wonderful. Guest artist VaLoy Eaton was there with Ellie Eaton; art up for bids included work by Michael Coleman, Joseph Alleman, Randall Lake, Bonnie Posselli, Earl Jones and more. Other items included 12 months of fresh flower bouquets; diamond earrings and a Chinese four-panel folding screen.

The evening's take was more than $80,000, with guests "buying" $6,800 for Art-in-a-Box, a statewide art-education program for second- through fourth-graders.

Sue and Walker Wallace were among the first to arrive at Glennwood, originally Walker Wallace's parents' home, joining event chairwoman Karen Freed, Jim Freed, Dow Richards, Patti Grant, Andrew and Candice Howell and UMFA director David Dee and Karen Dee.

Margot Shott attended, as did Mary Lee Christensen, Patricia Schneider, Clayton and Elaine Williams, Barbara and Ed Moreton, Sharon Coombs, Brent and Ann Scott, Joan and John Firmage, Kathi and Mark Miller, John and Pam Bollow, John and Cheryl Thackeray, Craig and Linda Lee, Phyllis Haskell and Doug Tims, Jim and Penny Ellsworth, Darm and Bette Penney and Carlyle and Rob Morris.

Lanny and Jack Barnard were there along with Sally Rosenblatt, Anne and Sandy Dolowitz, Jodie Bennion, Judy Wolfe, Paul and Marilyn Whitehead, Jane and Bill Owens, Carolyn Cowley, Lon Watson, Janet Minden, Nina and Bernard Bégué, Lon and Zoe Richardson, Katherine and Greg Miller, Paul and Terrell Dougan, Katherine "Kitty" and Hal Liddle, Cynthia Sue and Gary Anderson, Pat and Dave Noall, Betty Lynn Davis and Sue and Hague Ellis.

Meanwhile, it was cold and wet in downtown Salt Lake City as well, but the action was hot at the Salt Lake Art Center, where 250 guests bidding for 25 "adornos" (beautiful boxes filled with prizes) and live auction offerings, such as a Cyprus island getaway, raised nearly $100,000 at the Taboo Gala.

Add director Ric Collier's announcement of anonymous gifts totaling $1 million, and a good time was had by all.

Event chairwoman Sharon Loya joined Collier at the microphone while dinner designed by (Emery) Lortsher/(Gary) Vlasic and Chef Tom Grant was served. Bill Loya was there, as were Aden Ross, Dolores Chase and Richard Haacke, Susan and Jack Speers, Bob and Bonnie Miller, Twink and Chin Lee, Marian Iwasaki and Judge Glenn Iwasaki and Shelley Thomas Williams and Sam Williams.

Steve and Beverly Allnatt chatted with friends along with Val Antczak and Barbara Polich, Bernardo Flores-Sahagun, Traci O'Very Covey and Mikel Covey, Carl and Vanessa Laurella, Vasilios Priskos, Troy and Paula D'Ambrosio, Andy and Carolyn Schilly, Brent Moosman, Juan and Silvye Jimenez, Valerie and Trent Iorg, Thom Sawyer, Michael Shuping and Randy and Gloria Austin.

Odyssey House rocks

Odyssey House graduation/progression ceremonies are cause for celebration, and for several years, they have taken place, rain or shine, in the garden at Tuscany Restaurant in Holladay.

It was sunshine all the way on June 12.

Odyssey House participants, family members, friends and longtime supporters bid wildly on auction items, visited the buffet table and listened to a success story thanking the courts for the opportunity to be at Odyssey House:

"I didn't think I needed it. I was an angry person. But Odyssey House deals not only with addiction, it addresses relationships and attitude. It gives me the opportunity to change my life."

The Stoddard Brothers band was there, and so was the rocking Odyssey House Choir.

The event raised a record $60,000 for the residential treatment center for substance abuse. Proceeds support adult and adolescent housing, women's and children's program, children's services, intensive outpatient treatment, transitional housing and vocational training.

Emcee Tom Barberi greeted guests along with Melanie Barberi, Bob Slingerland, executive director Glen Lambert, board chairman Cary Dunn and board member Jerry Eldredge. Pam Hutchinson and Judy Adams shopped the auction along with Sen. Gene Davis and Penny Davis, Dorothy and Bert Dart, DeAnne and Stewart Hanson and daughter Jennifer Wakefield, Catheryn Martinez, Bob and Kate Anderson, Doug and Pat Black, Nate and Linda Dean, Robyn Davis, Lanny and Jack Barnard, and Ben and Tracy Altman with Nicholas, 2, and his grandmother Lynnette Lewis Altman.
