Orem • A little piece of school history was made Friday morning at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University when Stansbury enjoyed its first postseason victory.

The Morgan Trojans made sure that any success the Stallions volleyball team had would have to be limited to increments.

The Trojans plastered Stansbury 25-9, 25-16, 25-11 in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament to earn their spot in the semifinals opposite defending champion Desert Hills.

"This year, I feel really good. This is a good team, they're really solid," said Morgan coach Liz Wiscombe, whose squad improved to 19-5 after beating Dixie and Stansbury in the first two rounds of the tourney. "If we can keep the energy up, compete on every point, you never know where it will take us."

After routing the Stallions in the first set, Morgan gave up a few more points in taking the second. The third game was knotted at 9-9 when Morgan reeled off six straight points with senior McKenzie Schenk behind the service line.

Later in the set, it was sophomore setter Jorry Randall at the serving line when the Trojans scored the last 10 points of the match, including a pair of Randall aces, to finish off the victory.

"Especially in the last few weeks, we've been working on serving for quite awhile," Schenk said. "I feel like the team chemistry is much different than last year. I feel comfortable with what everyone is doing and that we're all going to step it up."

Stansbury knocked off Carbon in a five-set match earlier in the day to advance.

"We had never advanced past the first round, and that was the goal," Stansbury coach Clint Barnes said. "We wanted to make it out of the first round. There's a lot of emotion.

"It was a great game versus Carbon. They put up a great fight and we were a little mentally drained. It was pretty exciting, and we came into this match knowing that Morgan was a great team. We still played hard, although I thought we could have played a better match." —
