Orem • The stat line was impressive enough for Hurricane following a three-set beating of Tooele in the Class 3A quarterfinals Friday.

That three players led the Tigers with eight kills apiece further showed the victors' versatility.

And one of those three, senior Malary Reid, is a new component for a team and might be that little extra to get Hurricane over the hump.

Playing with a full-length leg brace to help the recuperation from ACL and meniscus tears suffered over a year ago, the Nevada transfer scored six of her kills in the first game as the Tigers established momentum against the Buffaloes in a 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 win.

"I feel that we can compete with every team here honestly," Reid said. "I think we're good enough to compete. I think we're good passers and good servers and we've got a lot of hitters. We don't just have one good hitter."

"You know, she struggled early on this season, wasn't getting a lot of playing time," Hurricane coach Daniel McKeehan said. "She had a lot to learn and she really blossomed. The second half of the season, she's really been good, and I think she has the highest hitting percentage in the state."

Fellow seniors Shania Hurst and Sela Filo also scored eight kills apiece for Hurricane (22-9), which beat Union to start its day at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley Unversity. Senior Brooklyn Gubler also got in the act with six kills for the Tigers, while 6-foot senior Kyndall Gardner chipped in four kills and a block.

"We're pretty balanced. If we're receiving the ball like we should be, we're really hard to stop," said McKeehan, whose team will face Snow Canyon in a 12:30 p.m. semifinal Saturday. "A lot of the times we went middle early, and they were so stuck on stopping it that their middles couldn't get to the wings, so we got some one-on-ones. I feel that, nine out of 10, we're going to win a one-on-one battle."

Tooele (22-5-2), which beat Juab to reach the quarterfinals, was led by senior Annie Dalton and junior Brin Stewart with three kills apiece.

"We knew we were playing a really tough team in Hurricane," Tooele coach Kristi Brown said. "They've got a good region down there, and they play fast volleyball all the time. "We don't see that as much." —
