The Utes have announced Alex Smith, the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL draft, will deliver the 2014 commencement address.

Smith, the quarterback for Kansas City, was selected by the president and the Board of Trustees to give the speech during the ceremonies scheduled for May 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Smith went 21-1 for the Utes and earned a bachelor's degree in economics in two years with a 3.74 GPA. He was working on a master's degree before he was drafted.

"He is a standout example of class and persistence," Utah president David W. Pershing said. "It is no surprise that his teammates voted him the Ed Block Courage Award in 2011 as a model of inspiration, sportsmanship and courage. It is an honor to welcome Alex back to campus."
