Cemetery poaching

On Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m., someone shot a buck deer with an arrow at Mount Olivet Cemetery on 500 South across from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The animal was left to die. Cemetery workers made contact with a suspect vehicle and DWR officers interviewed the occupants, who denied involvement. The Utah Bowhunters Association has posted a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the poacher.

Cow moose killed in Mill Creek

Salt Lake County deputies caught three people in the process of packing up a cow moose illegally killed in Mill Creek Canyon on Sept. 13. They will be charged with wanton destruction of protected wildlife.

The suspected shooter had purchased a Utah small game hunting license and told officers he was under the impression that the license was good for any wildlife.

Elk opener calls

Wildlife officers received numerous calls on the Help Stop Poaching Hot Line on the opening weekend (Oct. 8-9) of the 2005 general elk season. Tips on the hot line included information about spotlighters, illegally killed cow and bull moose, doe deer and pheasants, trespassing, shooting from the road, and illegally killed bull elk in spike-only areas.
