VANCE BRAND
Owner of The Christmas Light Professionals in Salt Lake City
When and how did you get into the Christmas light installation business?
About 16 years ago, I was going to college and washing windows as a side business, and one of my customers asked me if I would hang their Christmas lights. Because I had worked for my father as an electrician I thought it was a natural fit.
How much does your service cost?
We have customers who pay anywhere from $100 to $15,000 to have Christmas lights put up and taken down.
Is there a lot of competition for customers?
Yes. It has become very competitive over the past few years but many of the people who are just getting into the business don't have liability or worker's compensation insurance nor do they really know what they are doing. It is common to hear of customers who paid someone, and they never put up the lights or never took them down.
What time of year do you operate your installation business?
We install from about October 1 to December 17.
What do you do other times of the year?
I am a general contractor and owner of Hatu Construction, a residential remodeling company.
Do you carry a special type of insurance?
Who pays your medical bills if you fall off a house?
I carry an umbrella insurance policy, worker's compensation insurance and health insurance to cover any accidents.
What do you like best about your job?
Being outside.
