Acting on numerous tips from the public, police on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of robbing a Key Bank branch in Olympus Cove.

Charley Louis Sanford, 19, was tracked by detectives then taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. at a gas station near 2500 S. Redwood Road, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak. The arrest came about 10 hours after his image was broadcast on news media outlets.

Sanford did not resist arrest but he was allegedly in possession of a handgun, Jaroscak said.

Detectives now believe he was armed at the time he allegedly robbed Key Bank, 4025 S. Wasatch Blvd. about noon Tuesday, the sergeant said.

Sanford was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. According to court records, Sanford, a resident of Davis County, has a criminal history. Last October, he pleaded no contest to illegal possession of a controlled substance and to possession of drug paraphernalia. Second District Judge Michael Allphin suspended a one-year jail sentence and ordered him to serve 18 months probation and pay a $1,100 fine.

A 26-year-old man who was with Sanford at the time of the arrest was booked into jail on an outstanding drug warrant.
