A Logan teenager accidentally shot himself in the leg when he was trying to clean a handgun Saturday evening, police say.

The 16-year-old boy was home by himself and decided to clean a .40-caliber handgun at about 5:30 p.m., said Logan Police Capt. Curtis Hooley.

The teen had not removed the ammunition from the gun, and as he was manipulating it, he shot himself in the leg just above the knee cap, Hooley said.

The teen called his grandmother, who then called police, Hooley said, and the boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Police anticipate the teen will make a full recovery.
