Sanpete crash injuries claim teen's life

A 17-year-old boy who was on life support after crashing his Chevrolet Cavalier on Sunday night in Sanpete County has died. Colton Dyches was southbound on State Road 117, near Mount Pleasant, when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a northbound GMC Yukon with two people inside. The driver and passenger of the Yukon received only minor injuries, while Dyches and his six passengers, none of whom was wearing a seat belt, were seriously injured.

Suspect ordered to trial on murder charge

A man charged with killing one man and seriously wounding another in March at a South Salt Lake party has been ordered to stand trial on charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Tyson Yellowbear, 21, allegedly shot and killed 23-year-old Danny Brown Tapuaialupe and wounded Pesio Vaeluaga, according to testimony Wednesday at a preliminary hearing. Yellowbear allegedly wounded Vaeluaga first with a shot to the back of the head. Tapuaialupe was fatally shot in the chest as he tried to wrestle the gun from Yellowbear, according to prosecutors. Siaos Vehikite testified he also wrestled with Yellowbear, who tried to shoot him. Yellowbear is set for arraignment on Aug. 21 before 3rd District Judge William Barrett.

Passenger killed in offramp rollover

One man was killed and another critically injured following an accident early Wednesday on a freeway offramp in Salt Lake County. According to the Utah Highway Patrol, a white Chevrolet Malibu was traveling west on Interstate 215 when the driver lost control on the Redwood Road offramp. When the car rolled several times, the passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene, according to UHP spokesman Jeff Nigbur. The driver of the car, a man who was wearing a seatbelt, was flown by a helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition, said Nigbur. Investigators suspect speed and alcohol may have played a factor in the crash, he said.

Rescuers recover body of drowning victim, 2

Rescuers have recovered the body of a 2-year-old Logan boy who disappeared from his family's houseboat early Wednesday in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Ryan Adams disappeared about 11:30 a.m. in Lake Powell's Warm Creek Bay on the Utah side of the state line. The boy, who had worn a life jacket earlier that morning, had shed the jacket to change into dry clothes before lunch. National Park Service rangers, a rescue helicopter and nearby boaters searched the area for 1 1/2 hours before finding the boy's body. Adams' is the third drowning at Glen Canyon this year, authorities said.

Police identify man who died in SUV collision

The Salt Lake County man who died when his SUV collided with a semitrailer truck in Summit County Saturday has been identified as Elwood Crandall, 75. The Salt Lake City-area man was driving east on Interstate 80 when, according to witnesses, his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the semi head-on at the Echo Port of Entry offramp, Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Nigbur said. The vehicles burst into flames. The driver of the semitrailer was not injured, Nigbur said.

Child porn on computer brings prison sentence

A 53-year-old Magna man who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography was sentenced Tuesday to federal prison for up to 10 years. Charles Lewis Searle had up to 150 images of child pornography on his computer, including ones depicting sadistic and masochistic conduct involving prepubescent minors, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court.

Would-be kidnapper sentenced to prison

A man who tried to kidnap a 9-year-old Provo girl was sentenced Thursday to 10 years to life in prison. Jimmy Guard, 28, was convicted by a jury of first-degree felony child kidnapping for the November 2004 abduction attempt. The girl kicked and punched Guard, then ran away, according to trial testimony. In a second case where Guard tried to abduct two Springville girls, he has pleaded no contest to two third-degree felony counts of attempted kidnapping. In July 2004, Guard was seen talking to the Springville girls, ages 7 and 12, in their backyard. Police later found in Guard's car a hatchet, video camera, latex gloves, condoms and a prescription medication that causes drowsiness. Sentencing in the Springville case is set for Aug. 30.
