Cameron Shumway wasn't afraid to admit it.
There were times that he felt overlooked. Under-appreciated. Under the radar, if you will.
Of course, there were reasons for that. Class 2A was nothing this season if not a launching ground for individual players with ridiculous statistics. But Shumway had the stats. And he had the wins as well.
"That made me feel better," Shumway said. "I knew that I was playing on a great team, and I knew that we wanted to win another title. That was our first priority. If we accomplished that, then I knew that the recognition would come."
Shumway is the Class 2A MVP for The Tribune because of his leadership, and his ability to make plays when games were on the line. And, of course, for his statistics.
Shumway, a smooth, agile, 6-foot-5 senior quarterback, didn't have many games where he needed to be on the field in the fourth quarter.
San Juan was, in a word, dominant this season, winning every game by at least 12 points and turning many contests into flat blowouts.
But he was the best player in the state in a class full of great ones. For the season, Shumway tossed 21 touchdown passes, six interceptions, and he threw for over 2,100 yards.
Most importantly, Shumway's team virtually was unbeatable when he started games. And to think, he played his first two seasons as a safety.
As a quarterback, Shumway's led San Juan to a double dose of titles, yet he has the same easy smile and shy personality that's endeared him to his teammates and coaches alike.
