The Cougars' bowl future as a football independent is slowly taking shape. We're still not sure what will happen after next season (2011), but the school announced today that it has secured agreements to play in bowl games following the 2012 and 2013 seasons if it is bowl eligible those years and not invited to a BCS game. BYU will play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl after the 2012 season and in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco after the 2013 season. This year's Fight Hunger Bowl is in early January, so the bowl in San Francisco following the 2013 season could conceivably take place in 2014. "We are thilled to have a relationship with these outstanding bowls. It is an important step for our football program as we begin playing an independent schedule," athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a school news release. "Both bowls are location in destination cities that appreciate great football tradition." The release did not say what will happen if the Cougars are bowl eligible next season. BYU will face a MWC team in the Poinsettia Bowl and a Pac-12 team in the Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park."We've had our eye on BYU for a long time, dating back to when our game had the MWC as a partner," said Gary Cavalli, co-founder and executive director of the Fight Hunger Bowl.
