Springville • The best team from unheralded Region 8 made its first-round playoff win Wednesday a no-doubter.

And, frankly, after Springville shellacked Woods Cross 4-0, that's exactly what the Red Devils want.

No more doubters.

To this point, the Red Devils have flown under the radar to a 13-3-1 record and, said senior midfielder Ryan Botcherby, have been overlooked.

"I think we have because haven't been ranked at all," he said, "but we're ready to fight for the state championship."

The statement hardly seemed bold given what had just transpired at Springville as the Red Devils won their first playoff game in three years. Botcherby scored twice, and two of the Red Devils' goals came on corner kicks — though the Wildcats hadn't allowed a corner kick goal all year.

"We were never afraid of Woods Cross," said coach Rick Bertelsen.

The Wildcats might have won Region 6, but a loss on May 13 to Bountiful doomed them to the No. 4 seed and an undesired trip to Springville. On top of that, Woods Cross was without second-leading scorer Leo Calquin. The junior served a one-game suspension for a red card he received against Bountiful.

Still, when Springville took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on Ryan Murray's team-leading 12th goal of the year, it felt more like it was the Red Devils gunning for the upset.

"We're a better team than people think we are," Bertelsen said. "We just don't play in a powerhouse region."

Once Murray scored, the floodgates seemed to open, with Botcherby starting the second half with a 44th-minute goal. Then, Bertelsen's son, sophomore midfielder Cole Bertelsen, found the net in the 70th minute and Botcherby added one more in the 78th.

"We still had nerves from losing the first game last year," Botcherby said, "and once we got that first goal, we just had confidence."

Mountain Crest 2, Lehi 0 • The defending 4A champions topped Mountain Crest 2-1 on April 2, but Wednesday, the No. 3 seed from Region 5 got its revenge on Lehi.

Highland 3, Provo 1 • As the No. 3 team from Region 6, Highland went on the road and thumped Provo behind two goals from Alvin Garcia.

Mountain View 5, Salem Hills 0 • Keegan Black earned his sixth shutout of the year as the Bruins upset the No. 2 seed from Region 8 on the road. Chris Reyes scored two goals for Mountain View.

Dixie 10, Payson 0 • The best 4A team from southern Utah put on a display at home against Payson, scoring seven goals in the first half. Trenton Truman scored four goals to bring his season total to 14.

Box Elder 4, Maple Mountain 0 • Four Bees players found the net as Box Elder held off Maple Mountain in Brigham City. The Golden Eagles couldn't pull of the upset in the first playoff game in school history.

Bountiful 2, Timpanogos 1 • After Bountiful fell behind 1-0 early in the first half, the Region 6 No. 1 seed was bailed out by sophomore defender Kaleb Maynard, who scored two second-half goals. Austin Buxton scored in the fourth minute for Timpanogos.
