A sixth-grade teacher at Good Foundations Academy in Riverdale has been named 2011 Charter School Educator of the Year for the state.

Sue Goers won the award from the Utah Association of Public Charter Schools last week. Goers serves in many leadership roles at the school and emphasizes hands-on lessons.

"Scholars don't simply learn about a comet, they build one using dry ice, they do not simply break up light using a prism, they create a white light in an experiment that mixes light colors from the spectrum," according to a school news release.

Goers was chosen from among more than 70 charter school teachers who were nominated.
