Grade: A-

CD • If you don't own the originals recorded by Buddy Holly, the musical legend who died at 22, this is the next best thing. Holly would have turned 75 this September, and the tribute album "Rave On Buddy Holly" is a fitting, often avant-garde and unusually fun tip of the hat to one of the best penners of melodies ever.

Newer acts like The Black Keys, Justin Townes Earle and Modest Mouse share the album with Paul McCartney, Graham Nash and Lou Reed.

Cee Lo Green's "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care" is a shuffling highlight, as is Macca's "It's So Easy"; he hasn't sounded this vibrant on a recording in years.
