Now a race horse has been named after Jimmer

Former BYU basketball star Jimmer Fredette, a first-round NBA draft pick of the Sacramento Kings, will do something no other collegian has ever done before on Friday when he plays in the American Century Championship golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. Fredette will talk about the celebrity tournament, basketball, and his golf game on Tuesday on a conference call. Unfortunately, many Utah media members, such as yours truly, will be at the BYU football media day in Provo and won't get to listen in. Perhaps Fredette will talk about the fact that now a race horse has been named after him. Sure enough, according to this story in The Saratogian newspaper, a 2-year-old prospect, the son of the horse Elusive Quality, has been named "Jimmer." As the article details, the wife of Glens Falls (New York) High basketball coach Tomy Hammel works on the barn staff for one of the top trainers — Bill Mott — at WinStar Farm. Apparently, Pat Hammel suggested to her bosses that they name a horse after Jimmer, and they obliged. The colt will run this weekend at the Saratoga race track, about 15 minutes away from Glen Falls.
