The Utes put the pads back on for Friday's practice and had what coach Kyle Whittingham said was a good day. "It was a good effort, a lot of good stuff," he said. Running back John White, defensive lineman Joe Kruger and offensive lineman Sam Brenner all sat out the practice nursing their injuries. The Utes are still in the game-planning stages, Whittingham said. "We haven't had a chance to watch as much tape as we need to as a staff so it's a work in progress," he said. As for the defense, it is readying for Georgia Tech's triple option. Right now Phil Hinson, a 5-9, 177-pound junior transfer from Snow College is running the scout team offense, although Whittingham said the Utes were going to look at other players as well as they try to find someone to mimic Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington. Washington has rushed 222 times for 890 yards and 14 touchdowns. "We need to get that settled," Whittingham said. "It's critical. He is the leading rusher, so we have to do that." Washington is 63-for-135 for 1,515 passing yards and 10 touchdowns and shouldn't be overlooked as a passer, Whittingham said. "He has about a 155 efficiency rating which is excellent," Whittingham said. "They don't throw it often but when they do, they are very effective." Asked about Utah's loss to Colorado, Whittingham said he didn't think the Utes did anything wrong in their preparation that would affect how they prepare for Georgia Tech. "What I learned is the same thing I've learned every week in the Pac-12," he said. "If you're not ready to play, everybody can beat anybody else on any given day. It's an ongoing lesson. They certainly played one of their best games of the year, but the talent is such that you have to bring your 'A' game every week in this conference. There was nothing I could discern and I don't think the players were distracted. Everybody knew what was at stake, but I don't think it was a distraction." - Lya Wodraska
