Utah Opera will present an opera in Spanish for the first time next season.
Daniel Catán's 1996 opera "Florencia en el Amazonas," the story of an opera singer who returns to her jungle homeland in search of her lost love, is the company's January 2013 offering. Soprano Cynthia Clayton, who has played tragic heroines such as Tosca and Mimì for Utah Opera in past seasons, will sing the title role.
The season opens in October with Verdi's "Il Trovatore," last seen on the Utah Opera stage in January 1985. The tale of switched-at-birth nobility and a Gypsy curse is best-known for the second-act "Anvil Chorus."
