Wells Fargo will leave The Gateway in May

Wells Fargo Bank is joining the exodus of businesses from The Gateway shopping center as the opening of the massive City Creek shopping, office and residential project gets closer.

The bank will close its full-service branch office on the east side of the upper level of The Gateway on May 9, after its lease expires.

Customer accounts will be transferred to the Wells Fargo branch office at 79 S. Main St., spokesman Mark Chapman said Monday. The office is on the same block as much of retail component of City Creek, which opens March 22.

"We have been evaluating the concentration and proximity of our downtown stores. Within a three-mile radius of downtown Salt Lake City, Wells Fargo has eight banking locations, not including our store at The Gateway. During our reviews, it was determined there were ample locations in the downtown area," Chapman said in an email.

Shoppers will still be able to use a Wells Fargo ATM machine at The Gateway, but a location hasn't been secured, Chapman said.

The Gateway has lost several tenants recently, including children's clothier Gymboree and apparel retailers Lane Bryant, American Eagle, and Express. Employees of Express have acknowledged that their store will move to City Creek. The other stores haven't announced their plans.

Wells Fargo's other locations in or near downtown are the 79 S. Main branch; 299 S. Main; 405 S. Main; 778 S. Main; Trolley Square ( 552 S. 600 East); 381 E. Broadway Ave.; 1955 W. North Temple; and University (235 S. 1300 East).
