Five local symphonies take the stage this weekend

The Salt Lake Valley is alive with the sound of symphonies this week — five different performances by five different local ensembles. Some perform alone; others perform in concert with other groups.

Oquirrh Mountain Symphony: American Tall Tales

Oquirrh Mountain Symphony and Repertory Dance Theatre present "American Tall Tales: Larger Than Life," a celebration of American folk heroes through music and dance.

When • Friday, March 16, 7:30 p.m.

Where • Midvalley Bible Church, 13985 S. 2700 West, Riverton

Tickets • $10 adults, $5 students, seniors and children ages 6-12; available at the door

Murray Symphony: St. Patrick's Day Festival

The Murray Symphony and their special guests , Celtic Mist, present an evening of great Irish music, including "Irish Washerwoman," "Danny Boy," "Lord of the Dance" and other favorites. Celtic Mist is a four-member group featuring a variety of acoustic instruments including fiddles, whistles, Irish bouzouki and bodhran.

Tickets • $6 general admission, children 10 and under free. Available at the door.

Salt Lake Symphony and Utah Voices: Glorious Beethoven

The Salt Lake Symphony and Utah Voices will present "Glorious Beethoven," performing the "Ninth Symphony" and "Gloria" from "Missa Solemnis," with guest soloists soprano Jennifer Larson, mezzo-soprano Kirsten Gunlogson, tenor Robert Breault, and baritone Steven Meredith.

When • Saturday, March 17, 7:30 p.m.

Where • Libby Gardner Hall, University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City

Tickets • $10; available at the door

West Valley Symphony: England, France and Russia

The symphony will perform "Symphony #2 in B Minor" by Alexander Borodin; "Sacred and Profane Dances" by Claude Debussy, featuring harp soloist Linsey Lesser; and "The Lark Ascending" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, featuring violin soloist Kelly Richardson.

Where • Granger High School, 3690 S. 3600 West, West Valley City

Admission • Free

The American West Symphony of Sandy

The symphony will perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, "Pathetique" and Gershwin's "Piano Concerto in F."

When • Sunday, March 18, 7:30 p.m.

Where • Congregation Kol Ami, 2421 Heritage Way, Salt Lake City

Tickets • $10 general admission, $8 students; available at the door
