Police arrested a man from Magna after he failed to stop for an officer and kept going faster and faster — until he finally got caught.
At about 11:35 a.m. a deputy saw a gray 2012 Mazda 3 driving east on State Road 6 near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. The car was traveling more than 100 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone and passing numerous cars in a no-passing zone, according to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers and deputies with the Carbon County Sheriff's Office pursued the suspect, along with a pilot with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, according to a news release.
Officers pursued the 29-year-old man for about 31 minutes at speeds in excess of 100 mph. At one point, a deputy with Carbon County Sheriff's Office tried to put spike strips in place, but the suspect avoided them and made "a deliberate effort to strike the deputy," the news release stated.
About 10 miles north of Helper, the man abandoned the car — later learned to be a rental— and took off on foot for about 16 minutes before officers spotted and arrested him.
The man, who initially gave officers an incorrect name, had several outstanding felony warrants in Salt Lake County.
"He is trouble on top of trouble," Cannon said.
The man was booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, evading, reckless driving, speeding, passing on a double yellow line, and possession of a forged government document and providing false personal information for a real person.
