Utah's 2012 political showdowns crystallize:
Hatch will go to first primary in decades, faces Liljenquist • Republican delegates forced six-term Sen. Orrin Hatch into a Republican primary with former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist by fewer than 50 votes Saturday while they nominated Mia Love, who is black, to take on Rep. Jim Matheson and last-minute shenanigans scarred an otherwise quiet 2nd Congressional District race.
Howell is Democratic choice in Senate race • Scott Howell instantly set himself apart at his party's state convention Saturday by making his speech to fellow Democrats in front of the podium instead of behind it. Flanked by a lively contingent of supporters on the Calvin S. Rampton Salt Palace Convention stage, the U.S. Senate candidate pepped up the audience with a promise to bring his experience to bear with their help to defeat the GOP nominee come Nov. 6.
Love wins 4th District nomination over Wimmer, will face Matheson • Mia Love pulled a major upset on Saturday, winning the Republican Party nomination in Utah's 4th Congressional District, advancing to face U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson in November.
Refugee numbers drop by hundreds in Utah, thousands nationwide • The number of refugees coming to America has sharply declined in the past two years, as security measures have increased for newcomers coming from some of the most turbulent parts of the world.
Richard Dutcher: Leaving his Mormon faith, staying with film • When Richard Dutcher wrote the screenplay for his dark drama "Falling" in 1999, he hadn't started shooting his landmark LDS missionary film "God's Army," and he was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When Dutcher finally filmed the movie in 2007 around the same time he was filming "States of Grace," the quasi-sequel to "God's Army" he wasn't a Mormon anymore.
