The University of Utah baseball team kicked off a three-game home series with Washington on the wrong foot, stumbling to a 9-1 loss Friday.

James Brooks and Shaun Cooper had two hits each for the Utes, who couldn't get much going against Huskies pitcher Aaron West, who threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just four hits.

Utah and Washington will play again Saturday at noon.

BYU 2, San Francisco 1 • The Cougars evened their series with the Dons in San Francisco behind a strong outing by starter Marc Oslund, who held his own against highly touted USF ace Kyle Zimmer.

Oslund moved to 4-0 for BYU (18-16, 7-4 West Coast Conference), which scored the game-winner against Dons reliever Elliott Waterman on a Brock Whitney sacrifice fly. BYU's Mason Marshall retired the Dons in order in the ninth to get the save.

The rubber match of the three-game series between the Dons and Cougars is Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT.

Softball

Oregon State 10, Utah 2 • The Utes had a disappointing start to their home series against the Beavers. Utah, 25-22 overall, has yet to win a game in Pac-12 play, fallingto 0-16. U. junior Kelsi Hoopiiaina, of Riverton, was a bright spot, with two hits and a run.

New Mexico State 4, Utah State 1 • The Aggies in blue fell to 16-32 overall, 3-13 in Western Athletic Conference play, with the loss in Las Cruces, N.M. Christine Thomsen had two hits for Utah State, including an RBI double.

BYU 5, San Jose State 4 • Cougar shortstop JC Clayton slid under the tag at home plate in the bottom of the seventh to score the game-winning run Friday in Provo.

Tennis

Hawaii men 4, Utah State 0 • The Aggies were bounced from the WAC tournament Friday in Las Cruces, N.M. USU finished its season with a 5-14 record, 0-4 in the WAC.

Oral Roberts women 4, Southern Utah 1 • In the semifinals of the Summit League tournament in Kansas City, Mo., the top-seeded Golden Eagles ended the Thunderbirds' season.
