The Cougars have gone into the backyard of their biggest rival to land two of their latest football commits. Thursday, Garrett England of SLC's Skyline High committed to the BYU coaching staff after receiving an offer at the Cougars' camp on Wednesday. A wide receiver, England is also a starter on Skyline's basketball team. Skyline coach Steve Marlowe said BYU recruited England as a safety. The 6-3, 185-pound senior was MVP of camps at Utah, Utah State and BYU but BYU was the first school to offer him a scholarship. Marlowe said England was timed electronically running a 4.5 40 at the Utah elite camp. "He's got great hands; he catches everything," Marlowe said. "Just a physical specimen, a great-looking athlete." Marlowe said England did not have great stats as a junior playing for coach Roger DuPaix because he was injured a lot. Also, Skyline primarily runs the football. DuPaix's son, Joe, is BYU's running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. England's commitment came on the heels of Wednesday's report in Totalbluesports.com that East High fullback/linebacker Patrick Palau had committed to BYU. Palua, the East product, primarily plays linebacker for the Leopards but will likely be used as a fullback at BYU. Also Thursday, several outlets reported that BYU received a commitment from Oregon receiver Tanner Shipley. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Shipley played last year at Wilsonville High in Wilsonville, Ore. Shipley also had offers from Oregon State and Wyoming, according to Scout.com. BYU now has 18 commitments from members of the Class of 2013. No fewer than 12 of those players have committed this month. Coach Bronco Mendenhall said in January that BYU would be more selective this summer in handing out scholarship offers, and not press so much for early committments. However, when he was asked about that at BYU's football media day on Wednesday, he said the Cougars are getting a large number of commitments because so many good players are attending their camps this summer. Shipley is the third commit from the state of Oregon, joining Brayden Kearsley of Aloha High School and Dallin Leavitt of Portland's Central Catholic High.
