A 10-year-old girl has died following a barrel-racing accident in Vernal, police said.

She was racing at the Western Park arena Tuesday when she lost control of her horse and hit a pole, knocking her off the animal, police said in a statement.

Emergency medical crews and a doctor rushed to her aid at the arena, and an ambulance took her to Ashley Regional Medical Center. She was later flown to Primary Children's Medical Center, where she died the following day, police said.

Investigators have determined it was an accident. The girl's name was not immediately released.
