A Moroni man was critically injured this weekend when his gyrocopter crashed at the Mount Pleasant airport.
The man, 40, was piloting the gyrocopter that was tethered to a vehicle being driven by his wife about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, said Mount Pleasant Police Chief Jim Wilberg.
Witnesses said they heard the propellers get louder and turned to see the gyrocopter hit the ground.
The pilot was flown by helicopter to a hospital where remained in critical condition, Wilberg said. It isn't clear why the airborne copter was being towed by the vehicle, Wilberg said.
