Police have identified the 2-year-old boy who shot himself in the head Tuesday in Sandy.

Ethan Hearty, from Denver, died after he shot himself with his grandfather's handgun. Police have not released any details on how the boy got hold of the gun.

The boy had traveled with his family from Colorado to visit his grandparents.

Police were called to the scene just after 7 p.m. Tuesday after the child somehow got a 9mm handgun and shot himself in the master bedroom of his grandparents' home at 8752 S. 500 East.

The boy was alone in the room at the time of the shooting.

He was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition, but died just after 8 p.m.

Police officials have not released specific details about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation, but said they anticipate the case will reach a resolution by Thursday.
