A fiery accident claimed the lives of a father and son Wednesday evening after an SUV crashed and burned on Interstate 15 in southern Utah.

West Jordan resident James F. Gardner, 48, was driving a Dodge Durango south on I-I5 with his son, Darrell Gardner, 6.

Witnesses said Gardner was driving in the far right lane and went off onto the shoulder, overcorrected back towards the median and rolled twice in the median and caught on fire instantly.

The accident happened at about 6:15 p.m. while the car was headed south about four miles north of St. George, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.

Southbound lanes were detoured until just after 10 p.m.

Johnson said investigators weren't immediately sure what caused Gardner to drift off the road.
