A September preliminary hearing has been set for a Salt Lake City man who allegedly shot up a city block, killing one man and injuring another.
Michael Eugene Vigil, 36, is charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, both first-degree felonies, and possessing a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony, according to charging documents.
The preliminary hearing, to determine if the case advances to trial, is set for Sept. 17 before Judge Ryan Harris.
Authorities allege Antonio David Vasquez and Lee Norton Otero were visiting Vigil's parents on July 28 at a home near 400 North and Grant Street (760 West) when Vigil, who had just arrived home, came out of the front door and shot Vasquez. Otero told police he fled when the shooting started, but Vigil chased him down the block and shot him in the chest and arm.
Police said they found Vasquez dead in the yard of a gunshot wound to the head.
Officers said they found numerous 9mm shellcasings in the yard and the street and what appeared to be bullet holes and marks in various vehicles and structures along the street.
There were also several people in the area when Vigil started shooting, charging documents show.
