Posted: 3:16 PM- A 20-year-old Salt Lake City man was sentenced Monday to a two-to-20-year prison term for the Christmas Eve 2005 shooting death of another man.

Anthony Alires shot 28-year-old David Pantelakis once in the head outside a West Valley City apartment complex after Pantelakis punched Alires' mother during a holiday party.

Alires' defense attorney at one time cast the homicide as a case of self-defense.

In January, Alires, who was charged with first-degree felony murder, pleaded guilty to a lesser count of second-degree felony manslaughter.

By adding dangerous weapon enhancements, 3rd District Judge Randall Skanchy increased the usual one-to-15-year prison term for manslaughter to a 20-year maximum.

The fight that resulted in Pantelakis's death stemmed from the presence of a 15-year-old girl at his party, according to testimony at a preliminary hearing last year.

Pantelakis uttered threats when the girl's sister came to get her.

And during a second confrontation over the girl's presence, Pantelakis punched Rosita Franco, Anthony Alires' mother, who had accompanied the girl's sister.

Alires - who earlier was talking and laughing with Pantelakis - responded by shooting Pantelakis in the head, according to a witness.

After Pantelakis was shot, partygoers beat and kicked Franco, 37, who nearly died from three stab wounds.
