A Provo man was in the hospital Tuesday after he was allegedly stabbed and shot at the culmination of a dispute with his girlfriend's family.

Provo police Sgt. Brandon Post said the incident began with a loud argument outside a southwest Provo apartment complex near 1000 West and 600 South between the 24-year-old man and his girlfriend's mother. Responding police broke up the dispute about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, but about 20 minutes later another officer came across a man running toward his squad car about six blocks away, bleeding.

"He stopped the male, and it was the same guy involved in the trespass situation," Post said. "The male was transported by ambulance to the hospital and was treated for stab wounds to the upper back and shoulder, and one shotgun pellet in his buttocks."

Post said the man remained hospitalized Tuesday, but was expected to recover. Meantime, two brothers of the girlfriend were taken into custody and were being questioned late Tuesday morning, Post said.

Police did not release further details on what the dispute involved.
