Some of those offensive plans could include backup quarterback Travis Wilson, who has a special package of plays designed to use his running abilities.
Whittingham wants to hold out as many as a dozen players with the possibility of redshirting them, but Wilson isn't among those.
"We have no plans to redshirt him so we'd like to get him involved," he said.
Starting quarterback Jordan Wynn said he didn't feel threatened by the inclusion of the freshman.
"Travis is a good player, he's talented," he said. "We have to utilize him. He is good in the run game. I actually look forward to seeing him play."
Roster changes: Sophomore Kenneth Scott is listed along with senior DeVonte Christopher as a possible starter at receiver.
Whittingham said the move was based on Scott's improvement and not a slip by Christopher.
"It's a competition every day and right now he has done enough in practice to be the co-starter at this point in time," Whittingham said.
Scott, a 6-foot-3, 202-pound sophomore, had just eight catches for 141 yards last year.
Freshman running back Jarrell Oliver is listed ahead of junior college transfer Kelvin York as John White's backup. Oliver has improved his blitz pickup to warrant the change.
Hit me: Wynn is ready to show once and for all his rehab from shoulder surgery is complete.
"Missing that many games and going through rehab and spring and summer workouts, it has been a lot of work," he said. "It's going to culminate Thursday night."
Last year when Wynn returned to action after shoulder surgery he looked timid in the pocket and his throwing motion was off.
He feels better about his upcoming game because the surgery was on his left, non-throwing shoulder and he feels mentally stronger too.
"It's a different mindset," he said. "This one was on my left arm and I don't need my left arm a whole lot. I'm ready. I've had a lot of time to build muscle and strengthen around it."
Of note: The Utes are as healthy as they can be and no players should be held out of Thursday's game due to injuries. The only season-ending injury sustained during the preseason was a broken foot to backup defensive lineman Junior Salt..Standing room tickets are available for Thursday's game.
